CHARACTER INFO.
NAME: Veronica Lodge
CANON: Riverdale
AGE: 16
APPEARANCE:
CANON POINT: 2x9 (After Archie, Jughead, Betty and Veronica meet in Pop's to discuss the identity of the Black Hood, but before Christmas Day.)

BACKGROUND: Veronica Lodge at the Riverdale Wikia.

PERSONALITY:

Like father, like daughter—though Veronica would like to think she's better than her father, and now lives defying the similarities between the two of them. Up to her father's arrest for embezzlement, Veronica was privileged, cruel (to the point of bullying a classmate into needing to transfer schools), and generally willing to mess with people to get a rise out of them. Much like her father, she embraced the chaos she could cause. After the arrest, some online criticisms forced her to look in the mirror and see that she was the cruel person the world believed her to be. From this point forward, she would be a better version of herself—though given that she is and will always be a Lodge, that's easier said than done.

"Better" never meant "timid," and Veronica makes it clear that she's a force of nature. These days, Veronica uses most of her energies to enact positive change. Part of what drives her is an uncanny sense of self-confidence: she rarely questions if her perspective is wrong. She's ready to slam into any problem that needs to be solved with all the bravado needed. Veronica isn't the type of individual who does things with half measures. If she's going to commit to a task, she intends to go all the way with it. Do slut-shaming boys need to be brought to justice? Do gang members need to be put in their place? She's willing to go to any lengths to see things through—with a very specific caveat: these actions need to be fully thought out and justified. For how impulsive she may seem, she isn't a fan of huge irrational leaps to various conclusions.

Veronica puts her perceptions and her beliefs at the forefront of all of her actions. She can be extremely selfish when she's caught up in a particular moment. She only sees how she can better a situation. It's hard for her to see beyond her needs and wants in any given moment, likely because she was raised in such a privileged household. Veronica wants to do good, but sometimes her idea of good is connecting with someone to make herself feel better rather than someone else. That's not to say that she can't see the error of her ways, but her old habits come to the forefront in these moments. Often, like her father, her apology to someone is a gift or a bold statement when all someone really needs is an explanation and an actual apology

Though Veronica has her bouts of selfishness, many of her actions are driven by a sense of righteousness and a desire to do good by others. She cares about other people's feelings, and is willing to empathize with most others in their time of need. She has a knack for having one-on-ones with various people in her life to try to help them through a rough patch. She relies on empathy and deep talks to try to understand where someone is coming from, and she's almost always willing to listen. Veronica's not shy about being someone's shoulder to lean on, and is willing to make herself available to do that on more than one occasion. She is a positive force and willing to encourage someone if they need the extra push. If anything, one could even go as far as to say that Veronica loves enabling someone when they need that extra push.

All of this these traits come back to one common point: how much of it is a willful change from who she had been raised to be by her parents? The Lodges are known for their willingness to be cutthroat. The problem was that her father had been caught and they needed to rebuild the foundation of their family from the ground up. This rebuilding isn't all that different from Veronica herself: she has to look at the roots of who she is and figure out how to be better. These days, she believes in social justice and the little guys—especially if those "little guys" happen to be important to her. In a very odd way, Veronica has taken the lessons of her parents in order to put an altruistic spin on them. Sometimes money can solve problems. She's just making sure that the people who benefit from those solutions aren't just her parents.

Her altruism doesn't mean she's completely abandoned her family's ideals. The Lodges are cold, adaptable, ambitious, and willing to cause a little chaos all to ensure that things turn out a certain way in the end. Sometimes the Lodge solution is to (secretly) resolve a problem with a bit of blunt force. These are all behaviors that Veronica exhibits. She'll manipulate situations while adapting to them rather quickly. That's how she avoids and identifies irrational leaps: she's been raised by two parents don't act based on irrational conclusions. Like her parents, she can deftly maneuver through difficult circumstances to ensure the outcome she wants. Simply put: like her mother and father, Veronica knows how to get what she wants. It's just that these days, much of what Veronica wants is not all that harmful.

The problem for Veronica is that her approach to these situations is almost exactly like her father: as the engineer of them, rather than someone personally involved. She can be the shoulder for someone to cry on, but that's often an act of portraying an idea. Once her own emotional stability is involved, she struggles. Her empathy has its limits and she can't always see past her selfishness to be there for others. When she is there for them, she struggles to see that something might be wrong with the person in question. It's hard for her to see past herself. There is a breaking point to what she can accomplish as a good person because she has never had the opportunity to really practice. How to manage a friendship or a boyfriend are two ideas that she's only started figuring out—and only started realizing that her Lodge-like upbringing ill-equipped her for. Being privileged meant that she could be selfish. Nowadays, intimacy is something she struggles with because she wants to be more accomplished at it. With friends, she can't always maintain interest in their problems. And with her boyfriend, she relies on physicality and actions when she can't express things through emotions or words. Veronica is trying to be a better person despite being raised by two parents who were extremely cutthroat and lacked warmth.

To put it simply: for as much as Veronica wants to do good, she grew up with two parents who never said "I love you" to one another. Objects took the place of expressions of love. Half of being a good person is Veronica drawing upon her sheer determination to get there. Good thing she isn't the type to give up easily.

ABILITIES:

  • Singing: Veronica is both a duet partner with Archie, as well as a member of Josie and the Pussycats.
  • Dancing/Cheerleading: The main takeaway from this is that Veronica is quite fit and in shape, as she's able to take on the more laborious parts of being a cheerleader with ease.
  • Makeovers: One of her personally cited gifts. Just one look at Veronica's wardrobe reveals her talent in picking the perfect makeup, jewelry, and anything else for herself and others.
  • Witty rejoinders: Another one of her personally cited gifts. This goes along with a particularly garrulous personality.
  • Tenacity: Most of Veronica's skills after this lie in being an intelligent sixteen-year-old girl with a lot of tenacity. She thinks quickly on her feet and has surprisingly good adaptation skills for someone who grew up with a silver spoon in her mouth. She has some business acumen, as well as the ability to read people. In order to make something happen, she's ambitious enough to not give up easily. As the root of all these traits is that tenacity.

    INVENTORY:

  • A mish-mash of several (let's say five—unless it's a larger duffel bag) of her favorite outfits. The majority of her clothes are white and black, so she assumes it's close enough to repping for Hathaway.
  • Three pairs of shoes (two with heels) that will pair well with the arrangement of outfits.
  • A pearl necklace (worn by her as she comes over).
  • A pearl bracelet (worn by her as she comes over).
  • Reading glasses.
  • Veronica's cloak.
  • Cellphone and charger. Separate from her magitek, it has pictures of her friends, family, and a good deal of all of their musical performances.

    HATHAWAY.
SUITABILITY: Despite the fact that Veronica is only sixteen and, on the surface, comes from a melodramatic nighttime soap opera on the CW, she comes from a life that has forced her to deal with the harsh realities of the world at a very young age. Of course, Riverdale isn't all high school drama—it's a noir show, complete with creepy narration and murder mysteries. Naturally, Veronica's suitability isn't only tied to the thematic consequences of the show. Her father is frequently referred to as the Godfather-esque figure of the creepy small town of Riverdale, and she's unfortunately very aware of how much his machinations are set to ruin some lives as long as he comes out on top. With that experience in her back pocket, Veronica has joined in on investigations involving a creepy teacher sleeping with her student, the murder mystery of one of the town's favorite sons, and a serial killer. Most recently, she's accepted a bigger role within her father's very sketchy company—complete with her mother telling her they don't do illegal things. After all, there's such a thing as "plausible deniability."

INCENTIVE: The "short version" of Veronica's incentive is that she wants Lodge Industries to be hers—and no one else's. To ensure that it's hers, she wants to work with Hathaway in stopping all of Lodge Industries' extremely illegal activities (even the ones they can "plausibly deny") to forcibly clean up its image. She wants to then have the money to buy all the shares out for the company, as well as any of the information about her mother and father's illegal practices so she can use it against them. After the clean-up and buy-out is complete, Veronica intends to "take things from there," so to speak: she'll put together her own board and appoint her own head of the company until she completes her college degree.

    SPECIALIZATION:

  • 1. Negotiator—Veronica Lodge is a Lodge. That means she's been seeing her father spin business deals from birth, even though her father has turned out to be rather into embezzling and a number of other sketchy side businesses. What's important is that Veronica herself has her father's mindset for scenarios. She can see the way through and punch a hole through it—not with her fist, but with her words. She's willing to stand up to any number of people, talk them down, and throw a speech or three out there when needed. She's big on being the center of attention. If a situation needs someone who will stand up and talk their way through it, she'll happily volunteer. In fact, she's likely on the task without volunteering. Underneath this bold behavior is a teenage girl who's incredibly cunning. Although a lot of her actions are outwardly unsubtle, she manages to cleverly navigate difficult situations with a clear mind that justifies all of her decisions—and makes it difficult for someone to stop her once she's put a plan in motion.
  • 2. Sentinel—Compared to Veronica's very clear "Negotiator"-like role in life, her specialization as a Sentinel is more difficult to justify. If there's anything that Veronica takes from her sometimes-too-devious parents, it's that she's willing to protect the people she cares for at all costs. The difference between her and Hiram Lodge is that she has genuine friendships outside of her immediate family. Whether it's Betty, Jughead, Archie, or even Cheryl, Veronica is willing to offer an ear to listen, a shoulder to cry on, or a hand to hold. She's selfish in a way that makes her poor at empathy at times, but she cares. Many of her bold actions are to stop people from being hurt, almost like putting up a garrish wall telling someone to stop whatever sketchy thing they're doing.
